I'M COVERED IN BEES!
This game is a silly idea for a large public screen like the one in
millenium square. I'd use some sort of blob detection to make Zombie
Bees (Zombees, a mascot-like creature my group is working with this
year) swarm around the people in the square.
This would also work with regular common garden ZombIES but I think
that would probably freak people out a bit. Nobody's going to complain
about being virtually attacked by something as cute as:
Bawww.. Anyway.. There's a game idea here too, the zombees are slow,
but troublesome in numbers. They don't like sudden movements though..
So, anyone with a savior complex can run around the square waving
their arms and scaring away the killer swarm. As they do this,
hopefully some sort of coloured aura would build up around them, maybe
a little floating crown appear above them to show they're the best
bee-wrangler.
Past this point I'm really not sure what else happens in the game!
Umm.. I had thought perhaps if the Zombees manage to mob someone for
long enough their aura becomes red, and capable of sapping the player's
aura. But this sounds complex and confusing for the poor camera, I
think it'd be better to just leave it at that and have there be no more
point. How would you tell a player in the square that you're dead and
they aren't allowed to play any more anyway? That would be a bit harsh.
Oh well, maybe implying there is much more of a point would be funny on
the off-chance that more people start running around for hours scaring
away imaginary bees expecting something exciting to happen.
Here's my original Photoshop scribble of the idea..
An idea for an iphone casual arcade game. It has elements similar to
some old classics. See the spooky swamp page for more about the
iphone's specs and advantages.
You take the core gameplay (using cover, tryng to shoot another cowboy)
and theme of
Outlaw (atari 1978)
Add the "destroyable cover" element from;
Space Invaders (Taito 1978)
Take the perspective and similar art style (but in pixel graphics and
err, less cheap looking) to;
Diner Dash (Gamelab 2003)
Take the analogue control input (though using a finger to drag behind
the player) from
Breakout (Atari 1976)
In Saloon of Doom, you (and another player over wifi?) are stood behind
the bar of a saloon, chaos breaks out and you end up with thugs hiding
behind toppled tables, jumping out and shooting at you. The scenery
would mostly be destructable. There would be a vertacle stripe behind
you to move your finger up and down and move your cowboy/gun-toting
barmaid.
I think there'd be an optional mode where you can make kegs behind the
bar that are damagable and ultimately explosive, giving the game an
extra element of base defense.. You'd get a bonus for saving all the
beer! Enemy bandits would be able to throw cartoon style bombs over the
bar, but you'd be able to a) throw them back or b) shoot them in
mid-air.
Above shows a very rough mockup.. The player(s) at the left of
the screen. Bandits occasionally walk through the door and take cover
behind a table. Over time they gradually dash to tables closer to the
bar, until ultimately the jump over and hurt you in a melee attack
before a canned animation knocks them out.
You'd drag your thumb up and down the left side tapping the right to
fire/throw back bombs. Each consecutive stage would have more and
quicker bandits who use the cover more intelligently/poke out for
shorter times.
A 2 (or 4!) player vs mode with no defensive bar (just tables
between) could be a lot of fun too.
There would be online highscores.
